What Are Tumbling Reels

After a win lands, the winning symbols vanish from the grid. Remaining symbols drop down (or in some games, new symbols fill the gaps from the right) and fresh symbols arrive to replace them. The new configuration is checked for wins. If more wins land, the cycle repeats. The spin only ends when no more wins form. The mechanic is also called avalanche, cascade or rolling reels depending on the studio.

Why It Pairs With Multipliers

On its own, tumbling reels produce a stream of small wins. The format gets exciting when paired with an increasing multiplier — each successive cascade in a chain bumps the multiplier (1x → 2x → 3x → 5x in a typical implementation). NetEnt's Gonzo's Quest established this pattern: free falls with a 3x → 6x → 9x → 15x progression. Most modern cascade slots follow some variant of it.

Hit frequency on a single spin appears very high because every cascade counts as a "win" in the user experience. Underneath, the math is calibrated so the cumulative cascade chain has the same expected return as a fixed-spin slot — you are not getting "extra" RTP, you are getting wins distributed differently.
